If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to a tablet, you should have a look at the Aakash and see if it would suit you. Aakash is an Android-based tablet produced by the British company DataWind. Aakash Ubislate 7+ runs on Android 2.3 with an ARM 11 processor and has 256 MB of RAM. Of course, this tablet comes with HD, and it also has two USB ports.

The world’s most inexpensive tablet went on sale on 15 December last year, with a promise of a two-week delivery time. DataWind received 1.4 million orders over the first two weeks, and since then it’s received more than 2 million orders in total. However, the company has announced that stocks of the tablet are completed exhausted but that you can preorder the tablet on their website. The price of a Ubislate 7+ is set to 2999 rupees, which is equivalent to around SEK 390, and you’ll find their website here: http://www.akashtablet.com/

#opmegaupload was one of the consequences of the FBI recently deciding to shut down the Megaupload file sharing service. The company’s servers were confiscated when the website was shut down.

Not long after the crackdown, the activist network Anonymous went on the attack against the United States Department of Justice in the form of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. These attacks have been organised via IRC and Twitter, among others, under the name/hashtag #opmegaupload. RIAA and the US Copyright Office were two of the websites affected, and so they were unavailable for a time.

The FBI had the opportunity to crack down on the Hong Kong-based company because Megaupload had servers based in the USA. However, the initiative was implemented together with eight other countries; including New Zealand, where the police arrested Kim Schmitz, the owner of the site, and three of his employees.

These four men are now prosecuted for breach of copyright as the website is alleged to have caused losses of more than USD 500 million to the holders of the rights.

However, Megaupload issued a statement on their website just before it was taken down in which they stated that the majority of their traffic is legitimate and that they’d be happy to hold talks with the media industry.

Symantec recently discovered the biggest spread of nasties to date on the Android Market. The problem relates to 13 free apps which contain “Android.Counterclank”, as Symantec has chosen to call the trojan. It’s thought the trojan has been spread to between one and five million users, and some of the apps have been available on the Android Market for more than a month but were discovered by Symantec only last Thursday.

Android.Counterclank collects information from the user’s phone and loads ads, which then allow the people behind the trojan to make money from it.

Symantec has posted a list of the apps containing the trojan on its website. This list can be found here: http://www.symantec.com/connect/fr/blogs/androidcounterclank-found-official-android-market

So, how will the next generation of Xbox differ from its predecessor?
Rumour has it that it’ll be six times as powerful, with a Radeon HD 6670 under the bonnet. HD 6670 has outputs for several displays, DirectX 11, 1080p HD out and 3D as well. This also means that this new games console from Microsoft will have 20% better performance than Nintendo’s future “Wii U”.

What the next Xbox will be called, when a launch date will be confirmed and what it’ll cost are all unknowns as yet.

Nobody knows yet what Apple’s next tablet will be called, what it’ll include or what it’ll look like. What we do know, however, is that it’s expected to be released some time in February or March this year, so hopefully Apple will be publishing specs in the near future.

In other words, this article is based on rumour and forecasts on what people are saying about the next Apple table.

Inside

So, what might you expect to find inside the shell of the next iPad?

I think it’s very likely that Apple will be inserting a new processor. If the rumour claiming that Siri will be included in the next iPad turns out to be true, this will be a must; just like they were forced to upgrade the iPhone 4s with a more powerful processor to get Siri to work.
Rumour also has it that it’ll include a quad-core processor. This has led to speculation on whether Apple will go for OS X Lion as the operating system rather than iOS 5. With a new processor inside, we can also expect to see a better battery compared with the predecessors.

It should go without saying that the new iPad ought to include better cameras on the front and rear. But just how good these cameras will be, we don’t know as yet. Hopefully we’ll be seeing an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p for video, but unfortunately a 6-megapixel camera with 720p seems to be more a realistic option as things stand at present.

Outside

So, what might you expect to find outside the mass of technology inside the next iPad?

After much toing and froing, it finally seems that the iPad 3 will have a Retina display just like the iPhone 4s. So, with space for a new battery, a new display and – we hope – more new goodies than the rumours on the Internet have mentioned, we can probably expect the new iPad to be slightly thicker than the older one.

We can also expect it to be available in both black and white.

More rumours

Rumours claim that the next iPad will have an HDMI port. I’ve also read forecasts claiming that it could come with a Thunderbolt port, but I’ve not found any particularly strong sources to suggest that these rumours might be true. I just thought it might be worth mentioning.

Apple’s latest iPhone is called the iPhone 4s and is the successor to the iPhone 4. It is interesting to see just how much these two phones do actually differ from one another.

Let us start by taking a look at the size. Both the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s are 11.5 cm tall, 5.9 cm wide and 0.93 cm deep and have a 3.5″ display. There is a small difference in the weight: the iPhone 4 weighs 137 grams and the iPhone 4s follow-up weights 140 grams – three grams more. They are very similar in appearance; both mobiles are available in black or white.

The biggest differences between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4s are in the camera, battery life, a new processor and a new operating system. The camera in the iPhone 4s has been improved. The 4s now has an 8-megapixel camera instead of the 5-megapixel variant found in the 4. This means that the follow-up has a camera with 60 % more pixels, and the pixels have been designed with a higher charge capacity than in the iPhone 4 camera, which means that the iPhone 4s camera can gather even more light, which in turn leads to higher resolution and more detailed photos. As well has having more megapixels, the iPhone 4s camera now has a specially developed lens with a larger f/2.4 aperture which lets in more light, so photos look brighter and colours are more precise and even thanks to the advanced hybrid filter, which shuts out harmful infrared light. The iPhone 4s camera also has an improved backlit sensor, advanced colour reproduction and reduced motion blur.

The battery life for the iPhone 4 permits a call time of up to 7 hours on the 3G network and up to 14 hours on the 2G network; while the iPhone 4s permits a call time of up to 8 hours on the 3G network and up to 14 hours on the 2G network. The iPhone 4′s standby time is up to 300 hours, while the 4s has a standby time of up to 200 hours. Hence the 4s offers one hour more call time on the 3G network and one hour less standby time.

As most people know, the iPhone 4 uses Apple’s own A4 processor, which is powerful and energy-efficient, while the processor in the iPhone 4s has been upgraded to the A5 processor. The graphics with the A5 processor are up to seven times faster than the A4 processor, which means that games – for example – are more true to life and run more smoothly, and graphic-intensive apps work even better on the 4s. The operating system has also been upgraded to iOS 5 in the iPhone 4s.

To sum up, the differences between the iPhone 4 and its successor, the iPhone 4s are as follows: the camera, processor, battery life and operating system. The iPhone 4s should take better photos and be faster!

Samsung’s Transparent Smart Window at CES 2012 [Official]

One of the most exciting things at the CES 2012 last week was the Samsung’s Transparent Smart Window.

The Transparent Smart Window is a 46” LCD panel (1366×768 px) that really could take the world of tablets to another level. While it can do everything that your ordinary tablet or computer screen does, it’s also lucid so that you can look through it and see what’s outside your home or wherever you choose to put it. Thanks to its solar cells and the lucid screen it’s really eco-friendly since it uses the solar cells to charge it (partly), the ambient light as backing light during daytime and when it get’s dark it has two built in lights for that as well.

The Transparent Smart Window is built so that it looks like an ordinairy window for the outside viewer, in other words: they can’t see what’s going on on the screen.
This makes wonder though, how stupid would it look for the one on the outside, seeing someone pulling and dragging its hands back and forth on, what for them looks like an
ordinairy window.

Anyway, one other feature they pointed out last week at the CES 2012 was the virtual blinds.

The virtual blinds works just like ordinary blinds so you can decide how much of the outside light you want in your home. They didn’t mention anything about how the window will look from the outside wile using the blinds though, and because of the fact that it doesn’t show any other applications from the outside one could guess that that’s also the case for the blinds (but hopefully not).

It’s unfortunately too early to get a word on the price, or even estimate when this will be available in stores.

The above statement is quoted from Steve Ballmer himself and this could of course be true, Windows 8 is a pretty risky product. Windows 8 is the biggest step that Microsoft has taken in more than 20 years. What I am referring to is of course the step that they did in early 90s by pushing out DOS in favor for the more graphical interface OS, Windows.

The Windows Store

Microsoft has finally learned its lesson in how to make their product more appealing. In the Upcoming Windows 8, the key component will be the Windows store. The windows store will launch in late February together with the first beta release of Windows 8. Price range for Windows store apps will range from $1.49 to $999.99.

How will Microsoft get into the app market?

The Android platform has around 247 million users while iOS has around 152 million users. Even if we sum up all these users together they will not reach Microsoft’s whopping 500 million user base.

This is good news for us developers since Microsoft has really simplified the way apps will work in Windows 8. We will be able to build apps in HTML5 and Javascript, or if you’re not into that fancy web typish development, you can go hardcore C++ or choose between the Microsoft languages C# or Visual Basic.

Microsoft is also establishing a very attractive business model to lure in would-be developers by offering them a 70-30 split. Once an app has reached $25,000 in revenue, the split shifts up to a 80-20 split which is really nice.

Another difference with apps downloaded from Windows store compared to Android and iOS is that as a developer, instead of building a lite version you can release a time limited demo version of your app that is a full version app with all the features but for a limited amount of days.

I am really excited to see how Windows 8 and Windows store will evolve the upcoming months and I will continue to cover windows 8 and Windows store related topics, so subscribe to our feed.

Google plus is growing, regardless of what the haters or Facebook fanboys are saying. In the beginning it was tech geeks and early adopters that joined Googles social network but the masses are on their way, it’s going mainstream.

Social networks thrive on 2 things. The amount of members the network has and how connected the users are, which brings us to today’s topic, namely “How to get friends on Google plus”.

What i noticed quite fast when I joined Google plus was that you start searching for people that share a common interest, be it Apple products, gardening or collecting transformer toys. So the best way to start of is to feel the buzz around a certain topic. For example let’s pretend for a while I’m an Apple geek and I’m looking for people that also are fans of Apple and maybe have some inside information about the release date on ipad 3. So I do a search in the top search box for ipad 3 and voilà, i get a list of people that share a common interest and might even have information on when this wonderful device will be released. Note: You can also pause the stream by clicking the pause button or it will keep updating itself automatically.

So, now i have a bunch of people writing about apple products, all i need to do is browse through their posts and find some interesting people and add them to an appropriate circle.

Google plus is not Facebook!

The way people connect on Google plus differs quite a lot from how they do it on Facebook, so don’t worry, you will not be treated as a stalker if you randomly circle strangers. On Google plus you get friends based mainly on common interest, not if you happened to chat on the same cocktail party.

Why isn’t anyone circling me back?

Would you circle back someone who’s profile picture is a pale anonymous avatar and the person has no information at all on his/hers profile page? Thought not….

Remember that you’re dealing with real people here and they want to know who you are. Don’t hide behind a Simpsons character, upload a real photo of you. Add some personal information, at least what you like to do on your spare time so people get an idea of what kind of person you are. By showing who you are will make you a lot more likeable and your credibility will rise.

Dos and donts

Do share interesting posts by other people to your stream

Don’t “steal” other people’s posts by copying their content and posting it as if it was your own

Do try to contribute to conversations on a daily basis as it will strengthen your personal brand and your online presence

Don’t “postjack” threads by going totally off topic in them, it will only piss people off

Do use common sense when writing stuff on the internet

Don’t write when angry or frustrated, go take a walk outside instead

I hope some of these tips will help you get more friends on Google plus, so start building your personal brand today, what are you waiting for?

I remember when I got my very first iPod for my birthday, about five years ago. It was pink and really small. I was so happy. Now it would be easy to take all my favourite music with me on my travels or out jogging. My happiness lasted until I downloaded iTunes onto my computer and tried to download music onto my iPod. I scratched my head and furrowed my brow. I couldn’t see the logic in this program, until I understood that it was all about “synchronisation”. I got so angry, why couldn’t Apple make the iPod work like a regular USB memory device, like other MP3 players? A lot of my friends thought that it did work like a USB device and saved their photos exclusively on their iPod, only to see them suddenly disappear at the next synchronisation, losing their photos forever. They learned the iTunes lesson the hard way.

iTunes has been around for more than ten years now, and it still works in more or less the same way. And now we also have iPhones and iPads, where iTunes also serves as the central tool in using them. Synchronisation is still the logic. Is this really the case in 2011? How can it be that people don’t protest more about this?

In October 2011 Apple released a new version of iTunes, iTunes 10.5. I waited hopefully for an improvement. Surely Apple had got it by now. Quite the opposite, now everything goes through the new iCloud service, which iTunes 10.5 supports. This provides the facility to define settings so that any apps, music or books you download are automatically copied to all your other iOs devices. It means that if you buy an MP3 track via your computer, the track can then be transferred automatically to your iPad or iPhone. Isn’t this once more about synchronisation, but simultaneously on several digital devices?

Below are some information pages and guides for those of you who still can’t do without iTunes.

Download iTunes 10.5 http://www.apple.com/se/itunes/

Read more about iCloudhttp://www.apple.com/se/icloud/

A guide that describes how to use iCloud.

Shouldn’t the age of iTunes have been over long ago? Or at least changed to be more like a USB device to benefit users? I look forward to hearing your comments and views on this.
